With officials declaring emergencies in numerous counties and on Native American Reservations throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, the United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries will continue the ongoing work of assisting churches serving communities most affected by this incredible Spring flooding for years to come.
If your congregation is providing an emergency evacuation or feeding shelter, is responding with enhanced food pantry assistance or with financial assistance to affected community members, UCC Disaster Ministries has a Solidarity Grant of up to $3,000 to assist in those extra expenses. Email Jo Ordway and she will ensure the requests get to the appropriate Disaster Ministry Coordinator. Grants can be processed in as little as 7-10 days.
If your church and community is affected, please reach out to our Associate Conference Ministers for general support:
Rev. Ellis Arnold (Iowa – Northwestern, Northeast and Eastern Iowa associations)
Rev. Jonna Jensen (Iowa – Southeastern, Central and Southwestern associations)
Rev. Darrell Goodwin (Nebraska)
Rev. Samantha Houser (South Dakota)
If your church uses the UCC-partner Insurance Board for liability insurance, your agent’s contact information can be found on our Partners webpage.
UCC Disaster Ministries stands ready to Love their Neighbors by supporting those communities not only in the immediate aftermath, but for the months and years of ongoing recovery. We encourage churches to take the One Great Hour of Sharing (which supports local and worldwide disaster recovery) offering scheduled for March 31, to invite individual donations by sharing the OGHS Donation page on social media and/or by assembling Emergency Clean-up Buckets. We will continue to list drop-off sites for those buckets on our website as the information becomes available. In the weeks and months ahead, we will also be encouraging you organize teams to help with clean-up and repair work.
The Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota conference also have special funds designated for disaster recovery ministries managed by conference staff. To give to those ministries, send a check marked with “state-Disaster Ministries” in the memo line to our Des Moines office: 5609 Douglas Ave., Des Moines, IA 50310. To access those funds for your community, contact your area’s associate conference minister.
