Marriage equality is the law in Iowa. Many in the Iowa Conference see this as a matter of justice and equality, and that extending the right of legal marriage to all loving couples is consistent with the fundamental principles of Christian teaching. Nonetheless, it is also true that no pastor and no congregation is legally obliged to either officiate at, or to host any wedding – same sex or otherwise. In this section you will find Frequently Asked Questions about marriage equality in Iowa, additional information about Open and Affirming congregations in the Iowa Conference and a pastoral letter written in the wake of the court decision legalizing same-sex marriage in Iowa.
