Imagine. That’s what we’ve been called to do at National Youth Event taking place this week at Purdue University in Indiana. Our theme scripture is from the prophet Isaiah, who commands us: “Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing, do you not perceive it?” During our Iowa conference gatherings, we’ve considered this phrase and both how inspiring and difficult this command is. Even for young people, letting go of the past and embracing new things can be a challenge. But, after this week, I suspect that it will be easier for these young people to do a new thing. They’ve met people from the United Church of Christ throughout the country, even the world. They’ve heard voices of young people who tell their faith story and are doing something to bring about God’s justice and peace in the world. I invite you to get a glimpse of what God is doing here by watching and reading about the happenings here on the NYE website http://www.ucc.org/youth/nye/
So, if you’re one of the 10 Iowa churches who have young people and chaperones at this event or if you have some new, younger folks in your midst, I call upon you to listen and learn from their inspired vision. How is God calling your church to do a new thing through young people?
